Of the plethora of things to come out of the anomalies it was probably to be expected that it was the most innocuous that would cause the largest problem. Well, at least the most interesting one.

They had turned up with tyres squealing and guns drawn and special forces in tow only to find that nothing had come through the shimmering portal yet. Or so they thought.
Stephen had been the one to figure it out when something had bitten him on the elbow.

They were insects, but not the type they had been seeing, no gigantic proportions or spitting, instead they were something that looked surprisingly like mosquitoes. Acted quite a lot like them too as it turned out.

There was sod all that they could do about herding miniscule insects through the anomaly so after half an hour of swatting at the buggers Ryan had posted a guard and they had slunk off to the pub, hoping to drink the itching of the bites into oblivion. Nick was scowling at one in specific on the tip of his nose while Connor was making a gaping wound out of the one on the back of his hand, Abby was gloating about her apparently superiority and lack of bites and the rest of them were just being generally grumpy.

Now, the deadliest animal on the planet is not the shark or the wolf or the bear, it is in fact something much smaller, the mosquito. In our time they carry all sorts of dangerous and deadly diseases, these mosquitoes were carrying something which had never seen humans before and so was turning into something not so much deadly as humorous.

They didn’t notice at first, getting completely pissed is pretty good at hiding the first symptoms it seems, though they probably should have noticed as none of them usually get drunk enough to dance on tables or begin to remove clothing, in fact Abby’s not sure she’s actually ever seen any of them actually get drunk before.

They’re incoherent enough that when the cab gets to Abby’s they all pile out and stand around stunned for a moment wondering why their street suddenly looks different.

Abby is sobering a little at this point and so just ushers them up the stairs and into the flat.

She heads straight for the bathroom and the panadol, popping a few into her hand for the morning. Stephen is fast asleep on one of the beanbags drooling slightly as she passes back through the lounge, Nick and Connor apparently propping each other up on the couch as Nick begins to snore. She leaves them to it and retires to her bedroom.

Abby awakes to a clatter in the lounge and a pounding headache that the painkillers are going to take a bit too long in fixing.

She’s wrapped in a dressing gown when she emerges, hair fluffy and sleep flattened on one side, and she’s both surprised and somehow utterly not when she finds the three boys sprawled around her lounge sounding as drunk as they were last night and playing poker.

Their bites have multiplied, red dots that march along their bare skin and look far too funny for her hung-over self to handle.

She also realises, as her sleepy and pounding brain finally awakes that they’re sounding more and more delirious and less and less drunk as she watches them.

Abby sighs as she reaches for the phone, dialling an irritatingly familiar number, it rings only four times before Jenny picks up.

“You too?” She doesn’t even wait for Abby to speak. “Captain Ryan has two thirds of his men singing their regimental songs and chasing pixies around the barracks. We’ll have an ambulance there in ten minutes.” She hangs up before Abby can speak and there is a clatter and a howl of laughter from the lounge as it becomes clear that the poker game behind her is betting more than chips.

Abby takes one look and decides to leave them to it; she’ll wait for the ambulance in her room.
