But now she was something new, something hard and shattered and teetering on the edge of madness and Nick couldn’t bring himself to love her anymore. Couldn’t bring himself to hold on to a woman who was as dead as the paperwork said.

He drove for hours, smoke swirling around the rear-view mirror as he twitched, bottle jammed beside the seat. He revved the car too high, listening to the scream of the motor.

 

But it came to an end, mounting the gutter as he pulled up in front of the house, idiotic and drunk and defiant.

 

Even drunk he recognised the look on his step-father’s face when he stood there and Connor wanted nothing more than to stay in this car with his smokes and his booze. But there was no chance of that.
